This internship is unpaid, in line with most UN internship roles, but the experience and network you’ll gain are invaluable.
💼 What You’ll Be Doing
As a Communication Intern, you’ll support UNEP’s Communications Division in developing and executing strategic content across various platforms. You’ll collaborate with experts, contribute to campaigns, and help drive global awareness of critical environmental issues.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assisting in drafting, editing, and proofreading content for UNEP websites, press releases, newsletters, social media posts, and internal communications.
- Supporting the planning and roll-out of global communication campaigns related to climate change, nature, plastic pollution, and more.
- Creating engaging multimedia content—infographics, short videos, reels, or visual storytelling for digital channels.
- Conducting media and stakeholder research to support outreach strategies.
- Monitoring and analyzing communication metrics and audience engagement.
- Assisting in organizing virtual or in-person events, webinars, and media briefings.
This is a creative, fast-paced, and collaborative role designed to give interns deep insight into the world of global environmental communications.
🧑🎓 Who Should Apply?
UNEP seeks enthusiastic, committed individuals with a demonstrated interest in the environment and strong communication skills. If you have a knack for writing, digital content, and media strategy, this could be the perfect opportunity.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or equivalent), or in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree, or must have graduated within the past 12 months.
- Academic background in communications, journalism, media studies, environmental studies, public relations, international relations, or a related field is ideal.
- Excellent writing and editing skills in English; knowledge of other UN languages (especially French or Spanish) is a plus.
- Strong understanding of social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, TikTok) and digital marketing tools.
- Graphic design or video editing skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar) are a major advantage.
- Demonstrated interest in environmental and sustainability issues.
