Vulamathuba Empumelelo is the community and social development arm of Communicare. Its overall objective is to create opportunities for the economic growth of beneficiaries by fostering the principle of Economic Mobility.

The Bursary Fund allows beneficiaries to pursue tertiary education, enhancing their self-reliant and financially mobile capacity. We invite applications from candidates:

  • Between 19 and 50 years of age
  • With or without disabilities
  • Employed or unemployed
  • Wanting to study full-time or part-time
  • In Grade 12, have completed Grade 12, and students at accredited higher education institutions.

Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Fund

Vulamathuba administers the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Fund (VEBF). The bursary allows recipients to pursue tertiary education, enhancing their self-reliant and financially mobile capacity.

The principal purpose of the Fund is to give financial aid to Communicare tenants and individuals from previously marginalized communities who have academic potential yet are economically disadvantaged and looking to pursue a qualification that is described as a scarce or critical skill.

We invite individuals who desire to study at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution, including TVET Colleges and universities, to apply for a bursary for an academic year. Priority is given to individuals accepted to study at public institutions in the Western Cape.

We will consider bursary applications up to an undergraduate level from financially needy learners, with or without disabilities, employed or unemployed, and performing well academically.

Grade 12 learners, those who have passed Grade 12 in previous years, and students already at recognised and accredited tertiary institutions are eligible for the bursary.

We will consider your application if you plan full-time or part-time studies towards an academic or artisan qualification. The bursar shall, for the duration of the funding, participate in community service or special project work as prescribed by Vulamathuba Empumelelo.

After successful graduation, the Bursar is required to “work back” a portion of the bursary inside the Communicare group of companies or any other organisation nominated by it.

The VEBF will determine the amount allocated to each student to R45 000.00*. The bursary covers the costs for studies (excluding postgraduate) at a recognised and accredited South African tertiary institution.
