The intern would preferably work full-time. A part time arrangement could be considered if the applicant has academic responsibilities. This needs to be specified in the application.
Location: The internship runs from 1 March until mid-December 2024 and will take place at our office in Kenilworth, Cape Town.
Isandla Institute is offering an internship opportunity for post-graduate students in our Backyard Matters Project, which advocates for an improved appreciation of, and support for, the informal backyard housing sector as an alternative and affordable housing solution for the urban poor.
The Backyard Matters Project falls under our Urban Land Programme.
The successful intern will be given an opportunity to learn in a dynamic and engaged working environment and sharpen their skills in relation to research, administrative/logistical arrangements and/or media communication.
Duties and Responsiilities
The following tasks are envisaged:
Research: • Gather relevant data and information • Review, summarise and analyse relevant secondary literature •Write/contribute to knowledge products • Assist with and/or implementing other relevant project tasks.
Logistics & administration: • Assist with and/or implement logistical tasks related to activities and events (e.g. focus groups, roundtables) • Write minutes of meetings/events • Develop and maintain a database of contacts.
Media and communications: • Update organisational social media platforms • Disseminate knowledge products • Write/contribute to media outputs (e.g. blog posts, updates) • Assist with and/or implement other relevant media and communications related tasks.
Requirements / Qualifications
To qualify for an internship, you need to have an Honours or Masters degree or be enrolled for a postgraduate degree in urban studies/geography/development studies/political studies, or equivalent.
It is a prerequisite that interns currently enrolled at a tertiary institution adhere to the requirements of their academic programme and continue to participate in relevant activities (e.g. attend classes, write assignments, etc.).
You also need to have the legal rights and permit to work in the Republic of South Africa as granted by the relevant authorities.
Remuneration
Isandla institute will offer a modest stipend towards travel and living expenses. The most important benefit, however, will be to provide the intern with a learning opportunity and adequate support in that regard.
