SANDF 2025 Intake Summary
The South African Navy (SAN) through its Military Skills Development System (MSDS), is offering young South African citizens an opportunity to serve in uniform on a two-year contract.

The Recruits will receive military training and further functional training in their first year of service. During the second year of service, depending on the duration of the functional orientation, they will be deployed where needed and given opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop their skills.
This is part of the South African National Defense Force’s (SANDF) Military Skills Development System (MSDS) which is now open for the 2025 intake.
About SANDF Military Skills Development System
The MSD system takes up to 2 000 volunteers into either the SA Air Force (SAAF), SA Army, SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) or SA Navy (SAN) for two years. Basic military training is first up followed by specialist mustering training, dependent on service and then deployment to a division, unit or base.
Young people who take part in this course also have an opportunity to further their studies within the military or develop their skills.
This year, the South African Army, South African Air Force, South Africa Navy and South African Military Health Services are calling on young people to serve.
The MSDS has opened applications for new recruits nationwide, the closing date is on 15 March 2024.
General Requirements for Navy
- • South African Citizen (No dual citizenship).
- • 18 — 22 years of age (Gr 12).
- • 18 – 26 (3 years Tertiary Qualification or N6) when reporting.
- • Have no criminal record or pending cases.
- • Comply with medical fitness requirements for the appointment.
- • No Visible tattoos (Legs. Lower Arm, Neck and Face).
Opportunities available
Select one of the following:
❑ COMBAT
- Aged between 18 – 22
- Completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science with at least Level 4 for both subjects (NO Mathematical Literacy), excl LO.
❑ ENGINEERING and/orTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
- Aged between 18 – 22
- Completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science with at least Level 4 for both subjects. excl LO.
- Mechanical Engineering. Electrical Engineering with N6 and Trade Test (Transcripts of N4 and N5 must be attached)
❑ SUPPORT
- Aged between 18 – 22
- Completed Grade 12
Other Requirements
Applicants will be subjected to drug testing, Psychometric and medical evaluation, verification or criminal record, prescreening and verification of qualifications.
