Job Summary

The National Research Foundation (NRF) and South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) are hiring for a Health & Safety Officer x2 posts.

Work Location: Cape Town, Western Cape and  Carnarvon, Northern Cape

Job Purpose

The purpose of this position is to facilitate, implement, maintain and monitor adherence to the SHEQ Management System to ensure compliance with the site, client-specific and legislative requirements.

About NRF/ SARAO

The National Research Foundation (NRF) supports and promotes research and human capital development through funding, the provision of National Research Facilities and science outreach platforms and programmes to the broader community in all fields of science and technology, including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’ss activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction.

SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.

Key Responsibilities

* Facilitating, Inspecting, implementing and Coordinating of SARAO Health and Safety policies and procedures at SARAO
* Supporting the Implementation of Environmental Policies and Procedures
* Facilitating and coordinating Occupational Health and Safety Management Practices and Safety Committees

* Conducting of safety inspections and enforce SHEQ regulations within SARAO, sites, infrastructures and facilities
* Conducting SHEQ Awareness
* Investigating workplace SHEQ incidents
* Facilitating Risk Management and Emergencies
* Facilitating Occupational Health and Safety Training and Administration

Qualification

* ND: Diploma safety management
* SAMTRAC training or equivalent
* 3 years’ practical experience as a Health and Safety officer
* Driver’s License
* Registration member Professional body (SACPCMP) as CHSO
* Computer Literacy

Experience

* Proven experience in maintaining ISO accreditation and auditing
* Proven experience in auditing, inspection, monitoring, coordinating, processes and procedures

Knowledge

* Working knowledge of the OHS Act legislation, construction regulations, and relevant ISO Standards
* Technical report writing
* Auditing safety processes
* Monitoring Risks
* Incidents investigations
* SHEQ training
* SHEQ awareness

Skills and Competencies

* Good inter-personal and communication skills
* Well organized and be able to plan and prioritize appropriately, with good time management skills
* Ability to work within a team and independently
* Excellent report writing skills
* Willingness to travel

* Ability to solve problems, interpret and analyze reports and data, and provide and implement recommendations
* Be able to work under pressure
* Have good attention to detail
* Hard working and committed
