The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is pleased to announce that the University of Birmingham scholarship at the International Development Department is now open.
Applications are open until Monday, 8 April 2024.
The scholarship offers a two–year master’s degree in MSc Development Policy and Politics, including an internship at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
About the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship
The successful candidate will undertake a full one-year MSc programme that covers modules such as International Development, Development Policy and Politics, Governance and State-Building, Democracy, Dictatorship and Development.
They will also have an integrated one-year internship with six months spent working on research with academics at IDD and the GSDRC and the other six months at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London.
During the internship, the candidate will work alongside the team on various initiatives aimed at putting governance at the centre of Africa’s development.
The scholarship offers an additional benefit of joining the Now Generation Network, a network of upcoming African leaders and young professionals.
The NGN comprises the Ibrahim alumni of Fellows and scholars and the annual Now Generation Forum (NGF) participants. The Pan-African network includes members from all 54 African countries with diverse backgrounds and expertise.
Eligibility and Requirements
- A first-class Honours degree or equivalent from an approved university is essential.
- Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the time of applying.
- Applicants must be African nationals domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- If English is not your first language and you are applying to a university, you must have good written and spoken English skills. To demonstrate this, you must achieve a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS or 580/93 on the TOEFL. You can find more information about the English language requirements on the university’s website.
What the MIF scholarship covers
- Full tuition fee.
- Airfare to and from the United Kingdom and visa.
- Monthly stipend and arrival allowance.
Application Process
Please note that applications for the Mo Ibrahim Scholarship must be submitted through the University’s online application system by 8 April 2024.
In addition to the standard documents, you are required to upload a 500-word statement and CV. Your statement should highlight why you are the strongest candidate for this scholarship.
