Job Summary

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites applications for the Library and Information Science Internship Programme.

Job Purpose

The CSIR has an Internship opportunity for Library and Information Sciencein the Library Technical Services.

The purpose of the Internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience in the library and information services field within a research and development environment.

Key Responsibilities

Under supervision the Intern will be required to perform the following duties:

  • Monitoring and processing Interlibrary Loan requests via the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) library system.
  • Front desk duties and walk-in clients training.
  • Assist in the administration of eResources.
  • Cataloguing of books and journals.
  • Assist in collection management projects and the shelving of books and journals.
  • Identifying items for weeding by following the approved weeding guidelines.
  • Assist in conducting quality control of the OCLC Knowledge Base.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in library or information science
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Customer service attitude;
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft PowerPoint / Excel ;

  • Attention to detail;
  • Team player;
  • Goal oriented and deadline driven;
  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise.
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
