The Council for Geoscience is one of the national science councils of South Africa and is the legal successor of the Geological Survey of South Africa, which was formed in 1912 by the amalgamation of three former surveys, the oldest of which was the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope which was founded in 1895.
Its mission is to facilitate integrated, systematic and thematic maps and conducting research on the onshore and offshore geology of South Africa, as mandated.
The Council also facilitates mineral, energy and agricultural development; they contribute to the assessment and sustainable management of mineral, geohydrological and geo environmental resources; and support infrastructure development.
