About the Role: Lead Climate Information and EWS Advisor
Position title: Lead Climate Information and Early Warning Systems (EWS) Advisor
Type: Full-time
Location: Likely based in UNDP’s Global Policy Centre or relevant regional hubs (remote flexibility possible)
Contract type: Fixed-term or consultancy (depending on applicant and budgetary considerations)
The Advisor will lead efforts across multiple countries to enhance their climate information infrastructure, improve forecasting capabilities, and ensure inclusive and gender-responsive early warning systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Guidance
- Provide technical leadership on the integration of climate information and EWS into UNDP projects and national adaptation strategies.
- Advise national governments on best practices and technologies for climate monitoring and disaster risk reduction.
- Project Implementation
- Oversee climate-related initiatives supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Adaptation Fund, and other climate finance mechanisms.
- Support project design, monitoring, and evaluation to ensure climate resilience outcomes.
- Capacity Building
- Coordinate training and knowledge-sharing activities with national meteorological and hydrological services.
- Build institutional capacities in data collection, modeling, and user-centered communication of risks.
- Partnerships and Innovation
- Engage with partners across the UN system, academia, and the private sector to bring innovative EWS technologies to UNDP’s portfolio.
- Lead advocacy and visibility efforts for climate information services as a development priority.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- An advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in climate science, meteorology, environmental engineering, or a related field
- At least 10 years of experience in climate change adaptation, climate services, or early warning systems
- Demonstrated experience working in developing countries and with international development organizations
- Strong communication skills and the ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects
Technical skills in GIS, climate modeling, or remote sensing would be highly valuable, along with fluency in English (additional UN languages are a plus).
